Cave Diving, Yucatan Peninsula
Photo: Christian VizlI have been a cave diver since 1997, and I’ve always been amazed by the natural beauty and uniqueness that you can find in the cenotes of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. They are spectacular in many ways, some of them very obvious, like the enormous stalactites and stalagmites, crystal-clear water, and the mystery and history mixed in the middle of the jungle. But there is also a more subtle beauty in them, hidden in their unique colors and details that are not easily spotted by diving or snorkeling in them. So that is my goal, to capture the fantastic details hidden in these natural wonders.
last weekend my lady friend, housemate and i set out to erect our ideal christmas tree. our tastes tend to run a little dark so we envisioned it studded with bone and feather ornaments.
the idea was all well and good, but we were concerned about the logistics of it… where would we find the matericals to embellish the tree? then, constance joked we eat buckets of fried chicken and collect the disgarded bones. sue and i exchanged excited glances and agreed it wasn’t a bad idea.
after eating through 15 pieces of fried chicken, we took our bones and boiled them in a pot of water and baking soda. we alternated turning the stove on and off for about 2 hours. after rinsing the bones, they looked like this:

next we soaked them in a bleach and water solution for 30 to 45 minutes. we allowed them to dry over night and applied a little heat with the help of a hair dryer. the result:

sue drilled some holes through the bones and we fixed them with hooks. i picked up some feathers from the local craft store and… volia! our voodoo christmas tree.

looks quite snazzy.
